A Checklist for Filing Water Damage Claims

No one ever wants to file a water damage claim. It’s simply not something that anyone ever enjoys, but it’s also a part of the process, especially after a flood. However, there are a few things that you need to make sure that you do or don’t do.

Initial Filing

You’ll have to file your claim as quickly as possible. The longer you wait, the more of a hassle it will be, and the more damage that will be done to your home. Your insurance company should give you all the details you need to file the claim correctly, and they have to begin investigating the claim within a fixed period of time. If your claim is approved, they must cut you a check, usually within 5 business days. If the claim is denied, they must explain in writing why it was denied.

Have Proof

Take as many photos as you can, and be sure to make a record of all lost belongings. Your list should be as itemized and as detailed as possible. Listing “television” is not going to be adequate. Be sure to keep track of furnishings, electronics, even dishes or other things that you might not consider “big ticket” purchases. Those small possessions might not seem like much initially, but their cost escalates quickly.

Meet the Adjuster

Either you will need to hire an adjuster or one will be provided. If you hire them, their pay will typically come out of the settlement that you receive. As a general rule, hiring a public adjuster will give you the best chance for success. They will handle all aspects of your claim, so you’ll have a little bit less to worry about.

Immediate Repairs

You should go ahead and make any immediate repairs that are needed. Be sure to save your receipts so that you can keep track of everything that you spend. Things like water removal and mold remediation may or may not be covered, depending upon your insurance. However, you should go ahead and see if they’re willing to work with you and communicate with your insurance company. Even if all the cost isn’t covered, you may be able to get it partially covered.

Long-Term Items

Wait on these. Permanent repairs require approval from your insurance company if you want them to get paid. Don’t jump the gun, because if you do, the insurance company will not cover the expense.
