How to Dry out Water-Damaged Drywall

Whether it’s from a burst pipe or a natural disaster, water damage is never something a homeowner wants to deal with. But, unfortunately, it’s something that happens to thousands of homeowners every year. If you find yourself dealing with this, follow these steps to try to dry out your drywall before seeking water damage repair in Smyrna.

1. Measure the Moisture

It’s easy to see where the water damage in your drywall exists. You’ll notice the discoloration and bulging in an instant. But it’s important to know just how much moisture is in that drywall if you’re going to try to dry it out yourself. Use a moisture meter to determine the extent of the problem. If the reading is more than 1 percent above the meter’s green zone, then the drywall material has been compromised and needs to be replaced, not dried out. If it’s below that, you can proceed with the next steps.

2. Get the Right Equipment

You’ll need to rent some heavy-duty equipment to dry out your sheetrock before mold sets in. This includes high-volume fans and large dehumidifiers. These can usually be rented from a home improvement store. Explain to the workers what you’re trying to do, and they’ll direct you to the right equipment.

3. Start Drying

Next, make the space as airtight as you can. Tape plastic sheeting over doorways and windows, then start running the equipment. Keep an eye on things and check your progress regularly using the moisture meter. Note that, on average, it takes about 3 days to dry wet drywall completely.

4. Repaint

Once you’re certain that the drywall is completely dry–use the moisture meter, not your eyes!–then you’re ready to repaint. Use a thin coat of oil- or alcohol-based primer before applying the matching paint. Feather it into unaffected areas for a clean finish.

Remember, not all drywall can be saved. If there is extensive damage, you’ll want to hire a professional to deal with your water damage in Smyrna.
