Drywall is easy to install and inexpensive, but unfortunately, can also be easily damaged. Everything from kids roughhousing to a rowdy pet can cause cracks or holes in drywall. You can also have gaps and cracks due to nails and other equipment used to hang pictures or shelving.
The good news is that you can repair drywall with just a few materials and a bit of expertise. Curious how to repair drywall cracks or how to patch drywall? Here’s what you need to know.
If you see a small crack in your drywall, investigate to see how deep it goes. If it’s minor, you can probably fix it by adding more drywall compound. Smooth it and allow it to completely dry.
Once it’s dry, sand the repair and repaint the area to match the surrounding wall. You won’t even be able to tell there was damage!
If the crack is deeper and goes through the drywall tape, you’ll want to cut around the damage and remove the tape. Scrape away loose drywall compound and create a “clean” crack. From there, use drywall compound to fill the gash. Add a piece of fiberglass tape over the crack over the wet compound.
Once it drys, add another thin layer of compound. Once this layer is dry, sand and paint to finish the repair.
Sometimes the damage to the wall is more than a crack — it’s a hole. In that case, you’ll need to patch the hole with another piece of drywall.
First, stay safe by ensuring you know where electrical wires are attached. They often follow studs, and you don’t want to damage them when fixing the wall.
For a small hole, get a drywall patch kit. Apply the self-adhesive mesh patch over the spot, and cover the area with a spackling compound. Let it dry and then apply a second coat of compound. Once the second layer dries, sand and repaint the area.
For larger holes, you can cut a square of drywall a bit bigger than the hole. Remove an inch of drywall on each edge of the square, leaving the paper intact. Then cut a square around the hole, matching the size of the drywall. Pop the patch into the hole, and use drywall compound to seal it in.
If the drywall damage is bigger than you want to tackle, don’t worry. You don’t have to do it yourself. You can call a professional restoration company to help.
Expert technicians have a lot of experience and know exactly how to fix cracks in drywall. They can also patch larger areas of damage. A professional will check for any utilities behind the wall before cutting around a hole to apply a patch.
